dc.description.abstract The precursor of Technical University of Mombasa was the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME) which first opened its doors to students in May 1951. The institute offered Technical and Islamic religious education to Muslims only. In 1966 MIOME changed to Mombasa Technical Institute and opened its doors to students of all creeds. In 1972 the Mombasa Technical Institute transformed to become the Mombasa Polytechnic with an increased range of courses. The dream of converting Mombasa Polytechnic to University College status was realized on 23rd August 2007 through legal notice no.160 that established the Mombasa University College (MPUC). The Commission for Higher Education inspected the University College in May 2012 with a view of assessing the readiness of the University College for a fully-fledged university status. The legal notice no 160 set out the governance structure of the Mombasa Polytechnic University College. In readiness for transition to a fully-fledged University, the University College submitted a draft Charter outlining the proposed governance organs upon upgrading. Having inspected the Mombasa polytechnic University College, examined its instruments of governance, its academic programmes, physical, human, library and financial resources, the Commission recommended that the University College be upgraded to a fully-fledged university to become the Technical University of Mombasa. The new University was expected to implement recommendations contained in this Accreditation Report in order to enhance the quality of teaching it offers to its students and play a greater role in the development of this country. A summary of the Commission's findings including an update of the current status is contained in this report. en_US
