Abstract:
The South Eastern University College was established through Legal Notice No.102 of 15th July 2008, as a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi. The South Eastern University College was established as a successor to Ukamba Agricultural Institute. The Ukamba Agricultural Institute (UKAI) is among Kenya's Harambee Institutes of Technology (HIT) that were developed in the early 1970's in response to a felt need in the country for skilled and semi-skilled human-power in technology. The college is in Kitui County about 170 km from Nairobi and 40 km west of Kitui town.
The Commission for University Education inspected the institution in May 2011, gave recommendations and has followed the implementation of the same. The Commission was satisfied that the institution had met the minimum requirement for a fully-fledged university and recommended that South Eastern University College be awarded a Charter to become South Eastern Kenya University. The University was advised to implement the recommendations contained in the Accreditation report.
