Abstract:
In 2008, the Government of Kenya converted Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH) into a University College and named it the Meru University College of Science and Technology (MUCST). The institution is located in Tigania West District, 12 km from Meru Town along Meru Maua Road. It was established through Legal Notice No. 103 of 18th July 2008 as a Constituent College of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The Legal Order establishing the University College provided for the appointment of a University Council which took place in January 2009.
A draft Charter, which provides for a Council, a senate and other governance organs of the new University was submitted to and examined by the Commission and found to be satisfactory.
The Commission for Higher Education inspected MUCST on 12th October 2011 with a view to establishing its suitability for upgrading to full University status. Having inspected and examined its governance instrument and evaluated its academic resources the Commission recommended that the College be awarded a Charter to become a fully-fledged University. The University was advised to implement the recommendations contained in the Accreditation report.
