Re-inspection report for United States International University (USIU)

Abstract

ABSTRACT In exercise of its mandate stipulated in the Universities Act 1985 and Universities Rules 1989 the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) inspected United States International University in November 2007. Rule 19 (1) (b) requires institutions to submit to supervision by CHE including inspection and visitation at such intervals as may be determined by the Commission. The main objectives of the re-inspection were: i) To assess the extent of which United States International University had developed and maintained standards since the award of Charter. ii) To assess the extent to which USIU had adhered to the provisions of its Charter. iii) To assess the extent to which USIU had implemented recommendations of the Commission at the award of Charter. The inspection comprised of the assessment of a Self-Evaluation Report and an onsite inspection of the University. During the onsite inspection meetings were held with the Board of Trustees/Directors, the University Management Board, Academic Council, Staff, Students and Alumni. The Commission concluded that while the University needed to sort out governance issues to avoid contravening the Charter, it was offering quality education and had implemented most of the Commission's recommendations. With its current enrolment of nearly 4000 students the University is playing an increasingly more significant role in the provision of quality higher education in Kenya.
